Pocitos Beach

Pocitos takes its name — 'little wells' — from the shallow pits along the shore where washerwomen once did the city's laundry in the 19th century. What began as a quiet spot outside town grew into one of Montevideo's most sought-after neighbourhoods.

Its curved beach on the Río de la Plata and the long seaside promenade, the rambla, are woven into daily life: people run, cycle, drink mate on the wall, and watch the sunset over the widest river in the world.

Today Pocitos blends elegant early-20th-century houses with modern apartment towers, cafés and restaurants — a place where 'living by the beach' is an everyday reality, not a holiday.
